Tribes

Tribes, by Seth Godin, discusses the power of groups of people to make change. The group can be small or it can be large. The size doesn’t matter but the message does.

At times, I’m a bit slow and don’t pick up on new concepts before they become popular. When Twitter was first released, I thought it was the most ridiculous product and use of the web. What was the value of sending 140-character messages! Today I am a tweetaholic. I tweet every blog post I write and tweet web pages that I find interesting. About 65 people find my tweets interesting. It’s a small tribe that I truly appreciate. Tribes are simply groups of people who share similar interests.

A political tribe is a grassroots organization that can initiate change. The open source software movement is a tribe that has changed how software is created and distributed. Tribes exist in the real world. Online tools are just a method to disseminate the message.

Tribes is an interesting and easy to read book that provides a simple but powerful message. It is worth a read.
